A part of SIFT's mission is bringing in new ideas about education. We are reaching out to leaders who have been a part of successful educational innovation to learn from then what challenges they faced and how they overcame them. We are looking forward to hearing the ideas of two such people in January.
January 20 is the special meeting announced at our last SIFT meeting, at which Alex Johnston of ConnCan will be speaking. They are on the web at www.conncan.org if you would like to do research ahead of the meeting. Please let Erika know if you have any questions for Alex that we can give him ahead of time.
January 25 Chris Barbic, founder of Houston's YES Prep schools will be speaking to us via phone. YES has been a game changing force in the predominately Hispanic Houston school system. They bring an intensive charter schools to bear on the the challenge of under performing urban education and have had tremendous success. See their site here.
Additionally, we am working with Brockton High School in an effort to arrange a site visit. See this NYT article on what Brockton has done and could be done here. We will post upcoming speakers as they commit. If anyone has ideas on educational innovators whose ideas could help us change Windham schools please contact Erika Haynes at hayneswillimantic@gmail.com.
